Jakarta, January 16, 2024 – PT Bank BCA Syariah (BCA Syariah) has launched the first session of the WEpreneur 2 program through a boot camp activity, providing business knowledge by experts in an online format, focusing on the topic of Strategic Business Growth, Tuesday (01/16/24).
Opening of WEpreneur 2: BCA Syariah Corporate Secretary Nadia Amalia (left) opens the business knowledge session through a boot camp on Tuesday (01/16/24). Also present were Director of Shestarts.id Geraldin Christina (center) and Womenpreneur & Business Consultant Nadia Sarah (right) who conducted training sessions on Business Development Strategies.
WEpreneur 2 is a mentoring and capacity-building program for women Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia. It is a collaboration between BCA Syariah and SheStarts.id. The program is part of BCA Syariah's social activities, especially under the pillar of Prosperity, and is a form of implementation of BCA Syariah's sustainability actions as a contributive and responsible institution, particularly in increasing literacy and inclusion in Sharia finance.
In her opening speech, BCA Syariah Director Ina Widjaja stated, “With better knowledge and skills related to business development, it is hoped that the 40 BigSistas can manage their businesses more professionally so that their businesses can grow sustainably and, of course, have a positive impact on their social and environmental surroundings.”
In this program, BCA Syariah has selected 40 female MSME participants aged 20-35, referred to as "Big Sista," from 25 cities in Indonesia. The types of industries pursued by these BigSistas are diverse, including culinary, crafts, beauty products, services, and waste management. In selecting the BigSistas, BCA Syariah and Shestart.id assess the social and environmental impact, as well as outstanding leadership potential of the participants' business activities.
In this year's program, the 40 selected Big Sistas will receive intensive training through boot camps conducted by experts and experienced industry practitioners. There will be six boot camp activities with various training modules, including business development, leadership, digital marketing, and financial management. In addition to training, WEpreneur 2 features a business pitching competition aimed at enhancing participants' abilities to deliver effective and attractive business presentations, capable of attracting potential investors.
BigSistas are also trained to become mentors with the mission of passing on the knowledge gained through a micro-mentoring program for female MSME communities in their areas. Through micro-mentoring activities, BCA Syariah aims for BigSistas to reach and educate more than 800 MSME participants. In the first WEpreneur program, BCA Syariah educated more than 400 female MSME participants through 15 BigSistas.
“We pay special attention to MSME players and women because we realize that women play not only a crucial role in families but can also be drivers for supporting the nation's economy through their MSME businesses,” added Ina.
Womenpreneur & Business Consultant Nadia Sarah, during her presentation in the opening session, said, “Based on 2021 BPS data, the number of female entrepreneurs accounts for 64.5% of the total MSMEs in Indonesia, or about 37 million MSMEs. Despite the dual role inherent in women in society, the entrepreneurial spirit of women is growing. Therefore, the organization of the 2nd WEpreneur initiated by BCA Syariah in collaboration with Shestarts Indonesia as a partner is a moment to celebrate and appreciate women entrepreneurs.”
MSMEs have a significant contribution to the national economic growth, job creation, and community empowerment. According to the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs data, MSMEs contribute 60.5% to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 96.9% to national employment in 2023. However, on the other hand, the MSME segment is the most vulnerable to economic fluctuations.
In supporting business growth in this sector, BCA Syariah also provides financing to the MSME segment. Until November 2023, the total disbursed MSME financing reached Rp1.5 trillion. MSME financing disbursement also constitutes the largest contributor to the sustainable financial portfolio, accounting for 64% of the total sustainable financing recorded at Rp2.3 trillion.
