BCA Syariah Enhances Journalists' Ability to Understand Sharia Banking Financial Reports

Sentul, October 27, 2023 - PT Bank BCA Syariah (BCA Syariah) collaborated with the national mass media to organize a Media Workshop with the theme 'Synergy of BCA Syariah & Media Enhancing Sharia Banking Literacy & Inclusion.' The event took place at Bumi Gumati, Sentul, Bogor, West Java, and was attended by 40 journalists from various mass media outlets.

Yuli Melati Suryaningrum, the President Director of BCA Syariah, stated, 'This media workshop is conducted to fulfill BCA Syariah's commitment to contribute to the improvement of Sharia financial literacy in the country. Coinciding with the Financial Inclusion Month held throughout October, this event is one of BCA Syariah's activities to educate various segments of society.'

BCA Syariah supports the Financial Inclusion Month 2023 initiated by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) with various literacy and inclusion activities. Until September 2023, BCA Syariah has conducted no less than 31 Sharia financial education activities, with a total of 6,500 participants, including students, university students, journalists, and SME players.

In this event, BCA Syariah collaborated with the Sharia Economic Journalists (JES), a forum of journalists covering Sharia economic activities in society, including Sharia banking, Sharia insurance, Sharia multifinance, and others. The topic presented in this media workshop was how to read Sharia banking financial reports.

'Journalists play a strategic role in enhancing the public's literacy about Sharia finance. One of the workshop's goals is to improve journalists' capabilities to read financial reports so they can produce quality and accurate news about Sharia banking,' said Yuli.

Meanwhile, OJK welcomed the media workshop. Mohammad Ismail Riyadi, the Head of the Sharia Financial Literacy and Inclusion Group (Director), explained that Indonesia has good prospects for Sharia finance development, especially in the current digital transformation era. 'Strengthening Sharia financial literacy must be done through collaborative and comprehensive efforts among all stakeholders. These improvement efforts need to be continuous and capable of optimizing digital technology developments to facilitate and expand access to Sharia finance as the main solution for the community,' clarified Mohammad Ismail Riyadi.

Based on the National Survey of Literacy and Inclusion conducted by OJK in 2022, the Sharia financial literacy index reached only 9.14 percent. Meanwhile, the Sharia financial inclusion index reached 12.12 percent. The gap between financial literacy and financial inclusion indicates that people tend to use Sharia financial products or services even though they may not fully understand them. This situation needs attention from Sharia financial service providers and all stakeholders to collectively strengthen national Sharia financial literacy and inclusion.

In the same event, BCA Syariah announced the winners of the BCA Syariah Journalist Writing Competition 2023, a writing competition for journalists with the theme 'Modernization of Sharia Bank Services.' The competition was participated in by 89 journalists from all over Indonesia, and four winners were selected:

  • Print Media Category - Hard News: Ahmad Nabhani, Harian Ekonomi Neraca

'We highly appreciate the enthusiasm of fellow journalists in this activity. The theme of this year's competition aims to improve public literacy about the developments and security of transactions in Sharia banks. We hope that the public's trust in placing funds in Sharia banks will continue to increase,' added Yuli.
