BCA Syariah Cares: Planting 1,000 Mangrove Seedlings in Tambakrejo, Semarang
Semarang, November 22, 2023 - PT Bank BCA Syariah (BCA Syariah) has established a collaboration with the Lindungi Hutan Foundation for the planting of 1,000 Rhizophora (Mangrove) seedlings in the coastal area of Tambakrejo, Semarang.
The collaboration ceremony took place in Semarang on November 22, 2023, with the President Commissioner of BCA Syariah, Ratna Yanti, the President Director of BCA Syariah, Yuli Melati Suryaningrum, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Lindungi Hutan Foundation, Miftachurrobani.
Through its BCA Syariah Cares initiative, BCA Syariah initiated a greening campaign titled "1,000 Trees for Tambakrejo." As part of this campaign, the company planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings along the Tambakrejo coast on November 11, 2023.
The event was attended by Corporate Secretary Nadia Amalia as the representative of the BCA Syariah headquarters, Branch Manager of BCA Syariah Semarang Maria Henniwati, representatives of BCA Syariah employees, the Lindungi Hutan team, and the CAMAR group (Cinta Alam Mangrove Asri dan Rimbun), led by Yazid.
President Director of BCA Syariah, Yuli Melati Suryaningrum, stated, "Mangrove planting is a form of caring action for environmental greenery and sustainability. We hope that this step will have a positive impact on the local ecosystem and provide economic value to the surrounding community."

The certificate is awarded for the implementation of mangrove tree planting carried out by BCA Syariah in Tambakrejo, Semarang.
BCA Syariah is committed to implementing sustainable finance, meaning that in its activities, the company always considers Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects. "We realize that the balance between ESG aspects greatly influences our business sustainability; therefore, in every business activity, we will maintain a balance between business and environmental sustainability," said Yuli.
Tambakrejo coastal area is located in the coastal region of Semarang City with a high level of environmental damage. The reduction in the mangrove forest area has a significant impact on the Tambakrejo coastal area, leading to routine abrasion and tidal flooding. The residents of Tambakrejo have to raise their houses every 5-20 years to prevent seawater from entering. Therefore, mangrove planting needs to be encouraged again to preserve the environment in Tambakrejo. Mangrove forests are beneficial for protecting the coastline from erosion, preventing tidal floods, dampening seawater waves, and providing resources for local farmers or the community.
The mangrove plants were chosen by BCA Syariah because they have benefits both ecologically and economically for the environment and the surrounding community. These plants can generate oxygen and absorb CO2 emissions. Each 1,000 Rhizophora plants planted can absorb approximately 512,176 Kg of CO2 eq. Their roots can strengthen the soil structure in coastal areas, preventing soil subsidence and erosion. Mangrove plants also reduce abrasion, and their fruits serve as a source of food for animals such as monkeys, proboscis monkeys, mangrove crabs, and birds. In terms of the economy, wood from mangrove plants can be used as fuel and for furniture. Tannins from the wood can also be utilized as natural dyes, and the leaves can be processed into chips.

Nadia Amalia, during the planting activity, said, "BCA Syariah strives to channel social funds to activities that bring benefits. One of them is through the planting of mangrove seedlings, which will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the environment and the local community. Through this program, not only environmental sustainability is the goal but also the empowerment and involvement of the local community in the effort to preserve the mangrove forest in Tambakrejo. BCA Syariah and Lindungi Hutan are helping to improve the economy of the community that plays a role as a provider of mangrove seedlings in this planting agenda."
